We're meeting for the third time on Wednesday 31st January, 18.30-20.30. (Location to be confirmed). This meeting will discuss the next steps of our "Reclaiming the Streets" campaign.
During our second meeting, we have identified St Paul's way (B140) as an ideal street which could be pedestrianised in Tower Hamlets. We also identified members of the local community to engage with and get involved in our campaign.
> What's the problem?
Road traffic across London is causing dangerous levels of air pollution. Tower Hamlets is one of the most polluted boroughs in London. Air Pollution is a vicious threat to Human health with disturbing consequences, such as stunted lung growth, strokes, heart diseases, lung cancers, both chronic andacute respiratory diseases and other lifelong health issues.
Children are particularly vulnerable to the effects of air pollution. Shockingly, over 60% of schools and colleges in Tower Hamlets are exposed to dangerous levels of NO2. Some of the worst affected primary schools also have large numbers of pupils from underprivileged backgrounds. This is both a social and environmental injustice.
> What can be done about?
Reducing road traffic, the uptake of electric cars and encouraging more people to walk or cycle can help to decrease air pollution to legal and safe levels.
Friends of the Earth Hackney and Tower Hamlets, Poplar HARCA and Our Air Our Health are collaborating on a campaign called "Reclaiming the Streets". The campaign focuses on reclaiming streets from motor vehicles, and putting in their place cleaner air, more greenery, fun and engaging community spaces, more cycling and walking, and stronger communities. We working with our neighbours and communities to understand how they think we can best do this.
In our second campaign meeting, we have identified St Paul's way (B140) as an ideal street which could be reclaimed from road traffic.
