The campaign so far

On July 18, 2018, we presented our petition calling for divestment to a meeting of Tower Hamlets Council, so thanks to the more than 1,100 of you that signed it.

At the meeting, the Council told us they intend to honour their campaign pledge to get rid of fossil fuel companies in the pension fund, however…

Dear Cllr [Your Labour councillor’s name],

I’m writing to you today because as a Tower Hamlets resident I’m concerned about the increasing risk of catastrophic climate change.

Cities around the globe, including London, New York, Paris and Copenhagen have announced they will be divesting from fossil fuel companies because the fossil fuel industry is primarily responsible for the emissions that drive global warming (1).  These cities are sending a strong message that they will not participate in or profit from the destruction of the global environment. They also recognise that we cannot wait for national or international measures; climate change is happening now, so we must act now.

I was inspired during the local election this past May to hear Mayor Biggs pledge to divest the Tower Hamlets pension fund from its investments in fossil fuel companies.  Unfortunately, I have not heard anything further about divestment from the Tower Hamlets Pensions Committee.

I appreciate that the actual sale of the investments in fossil fuel companies currently held by the Tower Hamlets pension fund may take some time, but I don’t understand why that should delay an announcement by the Pensions Committee that it will implement divestment.

I am therefore requesting you to speak to your colleagues on the Pensions Committee, to urge them to publicly implement Labour’s pledge to divest as soon as possible. I would be grateful if you could then provide me with an update of the status of this Labour manifesto commitment.

When Islington announced in September that they were divesting it was a significant victory for both the council and the community, and I look forward to celebrating a similar victory with you here in Tower Hamlets.

Kind regards,

[Your name]
